Cognition and Perception Rehabilitation

Our Occupational Therapists are trained in recognising and treating impairments, functional limitations and disabilities that result from a deficit in cognition or perception. Cognition is the mental process of thinking, learning, remembering, being aware of your surroundings and using judgement. Perception refers to our sensory experience of the world; becoming aware of and understanding things around us to then help us to act.

Individuals who have had some form of neurological insult (trauma to the brain) whether mild or severe, may experience cognitive and perceptual difficulties. For example, they may find remembering new information difficult, have limited concentration, not appreciate danger, be inattentive of one side of their body and find it hard to put clothing on the right way round.

Our team of occupational therapists use a variety of approaches with our clients to relearn and develop skills to support their independence, as well as working with carers to help them to understand how cognitive and perceptual difficulties can affect everyday life. We will also implement personalised compensatory strategies with our clients and enable those around them to use these strategies with them.

“I will be forever grateful to our OT and CPPS for their excellent work with xxxx. Without them, he wouldn't have made the progress he has made already, and we would have one very unhappy little boy.”
